We'd better tend our garden more mindfully, or not even Hellboy will be able to save us. Imagine the forges of hell crossed with the extraterrestrial saloon on Tatooine, and you have a notion of Guillermo del Toros 'Hellboy II: The Golden Army.' In every way the equal of his original 'Hellboy' (2004), although perhaps a little noisier, its another celebration of his love for bizarre fantasy and diabolical machines. He's Al Gore with unlimited mixed martial arts training, and as odd as it seems, "Hellboy II," "WALLE" and Werner Herzog's documentary "Encounters at the End of the World" are all saying the same thing. The adversarial Prince Nuada (Luke Goss, good with a spear and a variety of blades) is appalled at how humankind has trashed the planet. The Guillermo Del Toro sequel, 10 years old today, is a genre-redefining classic. The creature and makeup effects are by Mike Elizalde ("Men in Black"), who is a genius. , the greatest superhero fantasy movie of the 21st century. Here, for example, by the time we get to the climactic battle between the forces of good and the underworld prince's mechanical golden army of doom, it's simply the largest and last in a long line of combat sequences.īut there is an awful lot to soak up here visually, and that counts for a good deal. Del Toro and his sterling team of designers sometimes make it hard on the actors to be noticed. I wish, though, he had more to do in his own sequel. Ron Perlman is great to have around as Hellboy as before, his oaky, mellow voice belies all manner of freakish rage and loner angst. Del Toro's script, based on the Mike Mignola comic book, focuses rather dutifully on Hellboy's domestic strife with girlfriend and pyro-tyro Liz ( Selma Blair, looking like a live-action version of Colette in "Ratatouille"). It was able to communicate that it was purchased in the Troll Market before it expired again. The movie overall is engaging, though it's more cavalier regarding story and relentless in its action than its predecessor. Later, Johann Kraus uses teleplasty to reanimate a fairy killed when Liz unleashed her powers. After a vicious fight which claimed the lives of two human BPRD agents, Liz uses her pyrokinesis to blast through the auction house, roasting the fairies alive and sending Hellboy flying out of a window and into the public view. Later, agents of the BPRD investigated the disturbance. The tooth fairies were illegally purchased by Prince Nuada at the Troll Market, starved, and then released into an auction house, killing over 70 people. They were considered contraband, likely for their destructive nature. Despite their savage behavior, they are sentient and capable of communication, though not in human languages. They swarm in great numbers and are capable of overwhelming a humanoid target stripping them of flesh in seconds. When attacking live prey, they target a victim's teeth, though they will eat their prey until nothing remains but droppings. They feed largely on calcium (flesh, bones, organs and other tissues), and due to its higher concentrations of the aforementioned mineral, they prefer the teeth (hence their name). CLIP 2:57 Hellboy II: The Golden Army: Official Clip - Attack of the Tooth Fairies. The tooth fairies hail from the Black Forest, Germany. Hellboy (Ron Perlman), his pyrokinetic girlfriend, Liz (Selma Blair), and aquatic empath. Of course, these little suckers soon attack Hellboy, Liz, Abe, and the human BPRD agents, culminating in Liz having to utilize one of her patented fire blasts to take out all of the tooth fairies.
